Chester High School 2011 Teacher of the Year

Coach Crews at the recent CHS Graduation

Mr. Charles Crews, Social Studies Teacher and Head Football Coach, was voted the teacher of the year by the Class of 2011. Mr. Crews who came to the Chester Upland School District in the 2004-2005 school year was surprised when he was told about his new title. He has taught World History to Economics, the gambit of subjects as he tells it. He taught mostly 11th graders this year for his American History Class. Fifteen of his students were seniors and 12 football players. Six of his football players will be going off to college.

Chuck Crews, as he is commonly known as, also coached football at Chester High School when he started teaching in the district. Last year, he became Head Football Coach. “I love my job and there’s no place I would rather be. Students help to keep me in tuned to the popular culture. I want them to think outside the box, out of the normal for them.” Crews would like the students to become more cultured by not limiting themselves to this area. “There is a whole world outside of Chester,” he said.

Crews is settled on teaching this population of students. He has a fondness for the students here. Although the school year is over and summer vacation has started, Crews has already started summer football practice to get a competitive edge and to keep kids out of trouble. He will be holding his 2nd Annual Football Camp starting on June 27th, See the previous post with information on the camp. He said referring to his latest title, “Thank the students for thinking of me.”

Congratulations Mr. Crews on your selection as Teacher of the Year by the Class of 2011.
