Public Stargazing


Widener University Observatory offers free public telescope viewings

CHESTER, Pa.— The Widener University Observatory resumes its public stargazing sessions on Friday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. All are invited to see the stars, planets and other celestial wonders using the observatory’s 12- and 16-inch computerized reflecting telescopes. Widener astronomy professors, with assistance from undergraduate students, will be on hand to offer assistance.
Monday twilight viewings will be held at the following times:
September 9, 16, 23, 30                8:00-9:00 pm
October 7, 14, 28                           7:00-8:00 pm
November 4, 11, 18, 25                6:00-7:00 pm
December 2, 9                                6:00-7:00 pm

Friday evening sessions will be held at the following times:
September 6                                   8:00-9:00 pm
  October 4                                       8:00-9:00 pm
November 1                                   8:00-9:00 pm
December 6                                   8:00-9:00 pm

The observatory can be reserved for private group telescope viewing sessions. We consider requests for elementary and high school classes, Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, and other organizations. These sessions are generally held on Monday nights, separate from the public session. The maximum number (adults and children) we can accommodate is 40.
The Widener University Observatory is located on the 5th floor of Kirkbride Hall on 17th and Walnut Streets in Chester, Pa.
