Widener to Celebrate Sustainability with Tree Planting

Chester, Pa. – Widener students and faculty will celebrate Earth Day a few days early by planting trees and installing a new garden on campus on Thursday, April 19. The event is part of Widener’s April Sustainability Series, which has been showcasing the university’s sustainability efforts throughout the month.
Starting at 2 p.m., Widener students and faculty will plant three to four cherry trees and will repair a drainage area near Kapelski Hall. They will then install a garden as part of Widener’s new sustainability and civic engagement curricular pathway.
Last year, the College of Arts & Sciences received a $25,000 grant from the Teagle Foundation to pilot the development of a new curricular pathway. The three-year grant was awarded in a competitive process and was made possible through Widener’s affiliation with Project Pericles and the Lang Foundation. The pathway now comprises 14 general education courses that span nine departments in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Media interested in attending can contact Jessica Reyes with any questions.
WHO: Approximately 30 – 50 students and faculty are expected to participate.
WHAT: The Widener community will plant three to four cherry trees, repair a drainage area, and install a garden for the sustainability and civic engagement pathway.
WHERE: Corner of E. 15th Street and Walnut Street, Chester, Pa. (Green space between Wolfgram Library and Kapelski Hall)
WHEN: Thursday, April 19, 2 – 5 p.m.
WHY: The tree planting and garden installation will be a highly visual event in anticipation of Earth Day, which is Sunday, April 22. The event showcases Widener’s sustainability efforts and the new sustainability and civic engagement pathway. The event was organized by a student, who will be available for interviews.
