Clippers Win their 5th Consecutive Del Val League Championship

Chester (14-3, 7 -0) won their 5th consecutive Del Val League title and 40th consecutive league game under Coach Keith Taylor Sr with a 79-46 victory over the Interboro Bucs. Sophomore Larenzo Jerkins led the way recording a double-double with 12 rebounds and a game high 21 points. Senior Isaiah Freeman recorded a triple double with a career high 10 assists and matching his career highs of 13 points and 15 rebounds. Freeman became the first Clippers to dish out 10 assists in a game since Rondae Jefferson (1/28/2011) and Maurice Nelson (1/25/2011). Sophomore Kevin Rucker added 11 points and junior Terrence Cobb completed the double digits scorers with 10 points.

They look to complete their 5th undefeated Del Val League season on Thursday, February 10th when the host the Academy Park Knights. There will be a triple header with the Freshman team tipping off at 3:45, the JV tips off at 5:30 followed by the Varsity. It will be senior night and fans will be allowed in attendance.

Larenzo Jerkins dropped in 7 points and Isaiah Freeman added 4 points in the opening stanza and the Clippers were able to hold a slim 14-10 lead after the first quarter. The Clippers took advantage of their defensive pressure in the second quarter outscoring the Bucs 28-13 to push their lead to 37-23 at the intermission. All seven Chester players who saw action in the quarter put their names in the scoring column. Sophomore Kyree Womack (6), Freeman (5), Jerkins (4), Cobb (3), Olayinka Itabiyi (2), Rucker (2) and junior Brielynd White (1).

The Clippers continued to find their mark in the third quarter led by Rucker slashing his way to 8 points, Cobb knocked down shots from outside for 7 points, Freeman and Jerkins each contributed 4 points. Womack dropped in a trey while White went 2 of 2 from the line for the team 28 points. Chester led 65-40 at the end of the quarter.

The Clippers scored on their first three possession to open the final quarter with a 6-0 run invoking the Mercy Rule 71-40 at the 7:10 mark. Brielynd White stole the ball and passed to Jerkins for the deciding points. Freshman Dallas Thompson came off the bench to record his young career high of 4 points. 

Chester recorded their fourth consecutive game with double digit assist with a season high 19 assists. Cobb matched his career high with 4 rebounds and sophomore Jerry Young made the most of his minutes erasing the glass with 4 rebounds in the fourth quarter alone. 

JV GAME SUMMARY

Sophomore Dante Atkinson led the way with a game high 19 points as the Clippers sailed to a 61-49 win over the Bucs. Dante also finished with 3 assists and 3 steals. Sophomore Jerry Young filled the stat sheet with 4 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 2 assists. The Clippers led from start to finish in the contest: 13-6 after the first quarter, 23-16 at intermission and 42-32 at the end of the third quarter.
