Chester Falls in Opener

By Terry Thomas

It was an emotional night at Chester High School to begin the 2022-23 season. There was a special recognition and presentation to celebrate the life of former head coach Larry Yarbray Sr. Following a moment of silence, a beautiful black banner with Yarbray’s photo and the words “Service of Excellence” in orange letters was unfurled on the wall above the entrance to the Chester locker room. It will hang inside of the Fred Picket Jr. Gymnasium forever.

Following the heartfelt tribute, Chester then retired the jersey of Wilbur “Zain” Shaw, who played for Chester from 1988-1991, finishing his career as the all-time leading scorer in Clipper history with 1,993 points. Shaw’s foundation has always been family. It seemed only fitting that more than 30 friends and family made their way onto the court to honor with Shaw. He was presented with a black jersey with his iconic uniform No. 20 framed. As he spoke and thanked several people, he held his daughter tightly in his arms.

As the ceremony ended, Shaw slapped hands with each member of the current Clipper squad as they headed to their bench.

However, on the defensive end, the Clippers managed to hold the Speedboys to ten points enabling them to maintain the lead, 29-27, going into the final 8 minutes of play.

The Clippers defense forced a five second violation but turned the ball over on the inbounds pass which the Speedboys converted into two points.
