Chester Opens 2022 with a Win

Chester (4-1) opened the 2022 calendar and Del Val League play with a 70-66 double overtime thriller over the Penn Wood Patriots (2-2). The only disappointment was the lack of fans that would have cheered loudly as the teams fought to gain control of the game. Senior shooting guard Qadir Lowrie led the way for the Clippers with a game high 17 points. He secured the victory with by knocking down two free throws for a 70-66 margin with 8.2 seconds remaining in the 2nd overtime. Sophomore Larenzo Jerkins and senior Isaiah Freeman each contributed double-doubles. Jerkins finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Freeman added 10 points and a career high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Kyree Womack was the fourth Clipper in double figures with a young career high of 12 points.

Chester trailed11-17 at the end of the 1st quarter but fought back to tie the game at 28 as the teams went to intermission. The Patriots made the first run of the 3rd quarter for a 41-33 advantage with 2:47 on the clock. The Clippers respond with an 8-2 run and was called for offensive goal-tending on a 3-pointer from sophomore Dante Atkinson that would have given Chester the lead 44-43. Instead, the quarter ended with Chester trailing 41-43.

The teams exchanged leads throughout the 4th quarter until Lowrie connected on both ends of a 1 and 1 giving the Clippers the edge 54-51 with 26 seconds left in the contest. The Patriots tied the score at 54 with 9 seconds on the clock and Chester calling timeout. The Clippers final shot attempt was blocked and the teams heading into overtime.

Both teams slowed the pace limiting the number of possessions, Chester missed a couple opportunity at the free throw line but managed to stay close. Lowrie came through once again giving his team the lead 60-58 with 10.8 second remaining. However, the Patriots were able to force the second overtime. The Clippers maintained a four-point cushion throughout the added period until a Penn Wood trey for a 67-66 Chester lead with 35 seconds remaining. Freeman hit 1 of 2 free throws at the 23.6 mark for a 68-66 Clippers margin. The Clippers forced a turnover and Lowrie knocked down the game winners.

Junior Breilynd White contributed 8 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 steals. Sophomore Kevin Rucker added 4 points, junior Terrence Cobb connected on a trey in the important 2nd quarter and senior Yinka Itabiyi knocked down two 2nd quarter points.

The Clippers will host the defending 6A State Champion Reading Red Knights on Wednesday, January 12th with a 5:30 JV tip-off. Chester will close out their three games in three nights by hosting Del Val League foe, Chichester, on Thursday, January 13th. Catch all the actions on Cmpradio.net.

JV SUMMARY

Chester's JV improved their record to 3-1 after holding off a late fourth quarter surge by the Patriots. Sophomore Dante Atkins led the team with a game high 21 points including connecting on 9 of 10 free throws. Chester led the contest from start to finish never relinquishing the lead. Freshman Dallas Thompson joined Dante in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Hamza Clay-Goudelock just missed double figures with a solid 8-point performance to go along with his several key rebounds. Sophomores Jerry Young (5), Ra'Shaad Dorsey (4), and Emmanuel Smith (2) closed out the team's scoring.
