“Food Rules” Author Michael Pollan to Visit Widener University

Chester, Pa. – Michael Pollan, author of four New York Times bestselling books including Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, will speak at Widener University at 12 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23 in Lathem Hall, 13th and Potter Streets in Chester. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited and tickets are required. Tickets can be reserved by calling 610-499-4112 or by e-mailing cjcaporale@widener.edu.

Co-sponsored by Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Pollan’s appearance at Widener will be in advance of his evening appearance as part of the Philadelphia Speakers Series presented by Widener at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Tickets for the evening lecture are sold out.

For the past 25 years, Pollan has been writing books and articles about the places where nature and culture intersect: on our plates, in our farms and gardens and in the built environment. In addition to Food Rules, he is the author of the bestselling In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto (2008); The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals (2006); and The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World (2001).

Pollan was named to the 2010 TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people. In 2009, he was named by Newsweek as one of the top 10 “New Thought Leaders.” A contributing writer to The News York Times Magazine since 1987, Pollan’s articles have also appeared in Harper’s Magazine, National Geographic, Mother Jones, The Nation, The New York Review of Books, Vogue, Travel + Leisure, Gourmet, House & Garden and Gardens Illustrated.

In 2009, he appeared in a two-hour PBS special based on The Botany of Desire as well as in the documentary, Food Inc. In 2003, Pollan was appointed the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. In addition to teaching, he lectures widely on food, agriculture, health and the environment.

Now in its eighth sold-out season, the Philadelphia Speakers Series offers annual subscribers the opportunity to spend an evening with Pulitzer and Nobel Peace Prize winners, world leaders, statesmen, distinguished journalists, authors and other celebrated personalities.
