Chester Advances to 2nd Round of States

The season continues for Chester (19-3) after their 61-52 victory over the visiting Exeter Township Eagles in the first round of the State 5A Tournament. The Clippers advance to the second round where they will face Archbishop Ryan on Friday, March 11 at a site and time to be determined. 

The Clippers put three players in double figures led by sophomore Kevin Rucker with 17 points, junior Breilynd White's 16 points and sophomore Kyree Womack's 15 points. White and Rucker led the charge in the first quarter with 7 points apiece as Chester led 19-14 at the end of the quarter. Kyree Womack scored 8 points in the second quarter to hold off the Eagles. The Clippers took a 30-26 lead into intermission.  

The teams went back and forth during the third quarter until the Eagles scored on consecutive plays to tie the score at 41 with 1:55 left in the period. Senior Isaiah Freeman connected on 1 of 2 free throws at 1:27 to give the Clippers the lead, 42-41. Both teams held firm the remainder of the quarter with Chester heading into the final eight minutes of play with the slim lead.

Chester opened the fourth quarter with a Rucker trey but went scoreless in their next two possession and Exeter was able to tie the score at 45 at the 6:00 mark. The Clippers responded with an 8-0 run with four from Womack and two each from sophomore Larenzo Jerkins and White. With 3:48 to play, the score now read Chester - 53, Exeter Township - 45. The remainder of the quarter was a parade to the foul line for the Clippers and they connected on enough to secure the win. White went 5 of 6 and Womack delivered on 3 of 4 free throw attempts in the quarter.  

Although he on produced seven points on the night, Jerkins finished with a team high 10 rebounds to go along with 2 blocked shots and 4 steals. Freeman contributed 2 points, 8 rebounds and 1 steal. Senior Qadir Lowrie completed the team's scoring with 4 points. He filled his stat sheet with 2 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
