Chester moved to 6-4
overall and 2-0 in Del Val League play with a convincing 79-32 victory over the
host Interboro Bucs. The Clippers started slow and held a slim 12-10 lead after
the first period.
Sophomore Karell Watkins
was unstoppable over the middle two quarters where he scored 23 of his game
high 29 points. He also matched his career high of 20 rebounds finishing with
his eight double-double of the season. Senior Michael Smith displayed the skill
set that garnered him the nickname of "Man-Man" scoring 10 of his 14
points during the same time frame in conjunction with distributing a career
high 9 assists and a season high of 5 rebounds. With tonight's productivity
Smith joined a select group of Clippers with both 200 career rebounds and
assists. Chester held Interboro to single digit scoring in the 2nd & 3rd
quarters outscoring them 47-15 for a 59-25 lead entering the final quarter.
Senior Rahmaad
DeJarnette got the Clippers started in the 4th quarter scoring their first 6
points invoking the Mercy Rule at 65-25. DeJarnette finished with 17 points and
5 rebounds. With starters Rahmee Gilbert and Akeem Taylor Jr sitting out the contest
due to injuries, senior Christian Massena used the opportunity to match his
season high of 7 points. Sophomore Fareed Burton Jr. contributed 5 of his 7
points in the final period to go along with 2 assists and a steal.
Senior Javan Graham and
junior Zahmir Carroll completed Chester's scoring with 3 and 2 points
respectively. Carroll filled his stat line with 6 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and
one steal.
With tonight's 20
rebound performance, Karell Watkins became the first Clipper since the 1992-93
season with multiple 20 rebound games in their career.
Chester will take a
break from Del Val League action when they host Philadelphia's Bartram Braves
on Saturday, January 12th. The JV will tip-off at 3:00 p.m. with the Varsity to
follow around 4:30 p.m.
