Chester Upland News: State Control and Lawsuit Settlements

Earlier this week reports were that “The Chester Upland School District is headed back to state control”

Delaware County's Chester Upland School District, under state supervision for 16 of the last 18 years, is heading there again, with passage of distressed-schools legislation that will bring in a state-appointed official to devise a recovery plan for the district.

My favorite quote:

"What makes them think that we can't run our own district?" said School Board President Wanda Mann. "This is disappointing and discouraging news."

Chester Upland reaches agreement to settle lawsuits against state

The Chester Upland School District has reached a tentative agreement to settle a pair of lawsuits filed against the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The settlement calls for the state to relieve Chester Upland of millions of dollars it owes and provide an additional $9.7 million in funding for the 2012-13 school year, according to Michael Churchill, an attorney with the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia, which represented a group of Chester Upland parents and students in the lawsuit.
