Chester Boys Basketball wins at Harrisburg

By Terry Thomas

Chester wins the first of their four upcoming road games with an exciting 59-57 decision of the host Harrisburg Cougars. The start of the game was delayed due to a wrestling matched that was being held at the gymnasium. After Chester jumped in front 9-5, they were unable to find their mark at the charity stripe going 1 of 5 which allow the Cougars to stay close. Again, the Clippers used multiple players (6) to produce their 12 first quarter points. Chester - 12, Harrisburg - 11. With the majority of the roster in foul trouble, reserve Deshawn Hinson was called to action and drained two key treys in the 2nd quarter to help key the Harrisburg at bay. Senior Keyonte Watkins drained 7 points in the 2nd as the team played even and Chester held the lead 27-26 at the intermission. Both teams found their marks in the 3rd period and Chester found themselves trailing 34-35 at the 5:13 mark. Coming out of their timeout, the Clippers responded with a 13-7 run to end the quarter with the lead at 47-42. Marquis Collins started the run with a trey and Stanley Davis ended the run with a trey at the end of the period. Sandwiched between the treys were four points from Juanir Moore, a bucket by Jordan Camper and a free throw from Watkins. A couple free throws from Collins and buckets by Sudan and Watkins, follow by a Sudan free throw and Chester now possessed their biggest margin of the night at 10 points, 54-44. Harrisburg stayed closed by connecting on 8 of 10 free throws and a couple untimely Chester turnovers. Holding a slim 58-57 lead, Sudan went 1 for 2 from the line for 59-57 score with 9 seconds remaining. An outstanding defensive stand forced the Cougars into a bad shot at the end of the quarters.

All ten of the Chester players that saw action entered their name in the scoring column led by senior Keyonte Watkins (15) and junior Jamar Sudan (11) followed by Collins (8), Hinson (6), Camper (4), Henry (4), Moore (4), Carter (3), Davis (3) and Bailey (1). The team finished with 12 assists on 22 made field goals.

The team will return to league action on Tuesday, January 13th when they travel to take on the Chichester Eagles.
