Chester Boys Basketball snapped losing streak at Pete Nelson Holiday Classic

Report by Terry Thomas

Chester 56, Pennsbury 48

The Clippers (5-2) snapped their six game losing streak in the Pete Nelson Holiday Classic with a 56-48 victory over the Pennsbury Falcons (5-3). Seniors Jamar Sudan, Jordan Camper and Ahrod Carter led the way in the opening stanza combining for 14 of the team's 16 points. Sophomore Michael Smith chimed in with 2 points in the quarter. But that wasn't enough to offset the hot shooting Falcons and the Clippers found themselves trailing once again after the first quarter; this time it was 18-16. Chester found their footing defensively in the 2nd quarter and eliminated the open looks for Pennsbury resulting in a 6 point quarter for the Falcons. With the pace of the game slowed dramatically Chester was able to use five different players enroute to their 12 point production in the 2nd quarter which enable the Clippers to take a 28-24 lead into intermission. Smith opened the 2nd quarter with a bucked and then a trey from senior Jah'meir Springfield at the 5:00 mark gave the Clippers the lead at 21-20. Out of intermission the Clippers maintained their defensive intensity again limiting their opponents to less than 10 points in the quarter; Pennsbury did manage to score 9 points while Chester put up 15 with Sudan and Camper each scoring 6 points. Junior Brian Randolph III drained a trey to complete their scoring. At the end of the quarter the Clippers held a 10 point cushion at 43-33. After missing two foul shots to open the final quarter, Springfield fed Camper for a dunk that gave the Clippers a 12 point lead at 45-33. The Falcons would respond with an 11-0 run as the Clippers would go scoreless over their next seven possessions forcing Chester into a timeout with the lead now 45-44 with 2:54 on the clock. Michael 'Man-Man' Smith would score a bucket out of the timeout to give the Clippers a 47-44 lead. After several key defensive stops, Chester would connect on 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch with Smith going 4 of 4, Sudan 3 of 5 and Randolph 2 of 2 to finish the contest with an 11-4 run.

Jordan Camper went on to earn team MVP honors collecting a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also swatted 4 shots. Joining Camper in double figures was Sudan with a game high of 18 points and sophomore Smith with 10 points. Carter finished with 6 points, Randolph chimed in with 5 and Springfield's 3 completed Chester's scoring.

The win allowed team captain Sudan to lead his team in the celebrating of Coach Yarbray's birthday with the singing of Happy Birthday.

The Clippers will return to action on Tuesday, January 3rd when they travel to West Chester to take on Bayard Rustin for a 7:30 tip-off.

Happy New Year
