Widener University to name a “Cake Boss”



Chester, Pa. -- These days everyone has heard of Buddy Valastro – TLC’s “Cake Boss.” School of Hospitality Management students count themselves among Valastro’s biggest fans. In honor of the famed baker, students involved in the National Association of Catering Executives and the Society of Food and Wine have joined together to host the school’s fourth annual Cake Boss competition.

What: Cake Boss, hosted by the School of Hospitality Management at Widener University

When: Thursday, March 26, 2014
           7 – 9 p.m. (Judging to take place around 8:45 p.m.)

Where: Marriot Dining Room, Academic Center North, Widener University
                       
Why: Similar to the TLC program, contestants will submit entries that will be judged on both appearance and taste. This year there are three categories in which contestants can compete in: Grandmom’s Favorite, Most Unique Flavor, and Best Appearance. There will be great visuals of the decorate cakes.

There will be a winner in each category, which will be chosen by professional judges, and then the Fourth Annual Cake Boss will be named according to the popularity vote. The grand-prize winner will receive a cash prize and will be named the official ‘Widener Cake Boss,’ along with an embroidered chef coat emblazoned with this title. 

This year the students’ welcome a special guest; Master Chef Joseph K. Poon, known for his Asian Fusion Cuisine, will be on hand performing sculpt out artwork from food items, which has become his trademark. Chef will be doing a fruit carving at Widener. He has also appeared on TV's Food Network as well as the “The Tonight Show” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
