The university has awarded the
Newcombe Scholarships to 18 women students ages 25 years and older who
demonstrate a financial need. Recipients are enrolled full- or part-time in
baccalaureate degree programs through Widener University and have at least a
junior standing.
About half of the women receiving the scholarship are enrolled through the
Continuing Studies Division at Widener, which offers students flexible
scheduling with evening, weekend and online courses in their pursuit of
associate and bachelor’s degrees.
With this most
recent award, grants to Widener from The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation since
1981 now total $827,500. The scholarships have helped a diverse group of women,
many of whom are raising a family, complete a degree and pursue their career
aspirations.
“The Newcombe Foundation is one of
our most cherished partners,” said Don Devilbiss, associate dean of the School
of Education, Innovation, and Continuing Studies. “The generosity of the
foundation, year after year, has assisted a great number of our students in
completing their journey of earning a post-secondary degree.”
Widener was selected to participate
in the Newcombe Scholarship program because of its large enrollment of mature
women students and its exemplary supportive academic and personal counseling
services for these students.
