MLK Day Events in Chester




SUNDAY

“Sunday Supper: King and the American Promise” with Tau Delta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, 4-7 p.m. at the Yes We Can Achievement & Cultural Center, 4 E. Seventh St.
Tau Delta Omega Chapter in conjunction with the Yes We Can Achievement & Cultural Center and the MLK Commemorative Committee will present a meal and a movie as the commencement of the annual MLK Day of Service. Area youth groups are encouraged to attend this free event. RSVP registration is encouraged at 610-876-2222.

MONDAY

The MLK Commemorative Committee of Chester and Vicinity invites families and individuals of all ages to attend the day of service activities Monday that recognize the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme for this year’s day of service is “Pieces of Peace.” 

Service-focused free events will kick off at the Chester Boys & Girls Club, 201 E. Seventh St., from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., with activities including a mural project for the Boys & Girls Club, creation of personalized care packages, arts and crafts, essay and poster contests, performances courtesy of Mr. Scott the Music Man at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., a health resource fair, T-shirt design and lots of community spirit. A free continental breakfast and light lunch will be available for those who participate in the day of service activities. 

In addition to the Boys & Girls Club, local organizations and businesses have volunteered to do service projects at the STEM Academy at Showalter High School, 1100 W. 10th St. From 9:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., high school students, college students and local business leaders will work together to paint areas within the school and update bulletin boards. All volunteers are asked to pre-register by sending an email to aubrey.proud@crozer.org prior to Jan. 20, and to report to the Boys & Girls Club at 9 a.m. 

Following the morning schedule, the day of service activities will move to Crozer-Chester Medical Center at 1 p.m. for a ceremonial wreath-laying in front of the Old Main building, where Dr. King studied when he was in the Crozer Theological Seminary. The afternoon activities will conclude with an event at Crozer’s Clark Auditorium at 2 p.m. featuring a presentation from Rev. Dr. Clifford Johnson of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Wilmington, Del., and his church choir. These events are open to the public.

During the evening Monday, all are invited to participate in Widener’s annual commemoration of Dr. King’s life, sponsored by the Black Student Union at 6:30 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium. The program will celebrate the significance of Dr. King’s life and work, and honor the memory of Nelson Mandela.

Widener University will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of service throughout the city. Below is a detailed listing of events and service opportunities.

Boy & Girls Club of Chester, 201 E. Seventh St., will feature an event from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., with activities for all ages, including a mural arts project. Students from Widener’s Institute for Physical Therapy Education will be on hand to offer health and wellness clinics for community residents who are in need of assessment of assistive devices and educational resources for supporting healthy practices.

President James T. Harris III will join Widener students 10:30 a.m.-noon at Stetser Elementary School, 808 E. 17th St., to help reorganize the library. Students are invited to design a puzzle piece, which will be displayed in the University Center, as a part of a “We’re All Widener” Activity from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. 

Volunteers will help sort through clothes at the Better Living Center, 501 Yarnall St., from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 

The Widener Community Nursing Clinic will host a health fair 1:30-3 p.m. at CityTeam, 634 Sproul St., providing free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, weight checks, flu shots, and health education to the public.

The Annual Commemorative Service sponsored by the Black Student Union will celebrate the significance of Dr. King’s life and will honor the memory of Nelson Mandela. 6:30 p.m. Widener University, Alumni Auditorium
