Chester High School Graduating Class of 2013

Photo by Times Staff/JULIA WILKINSON: Edward Chamberlain, center, is surrounded by fellow graduates from Chester High on Friday June 7. He picked up a diploma 60 years after his high school education was interrupted by the Korean War.

I have been to a lot of graduations, inside and outside and I must say that this one was normal just like any other graduation. The graduating class of 2013 was like any other graduating class despite the consistent heavy rain that moved the venue from the usual A Field location to inside of Chester High School gymnasium. Kudos to Mr. Reginald Springfield and the graduation committee for working so hard to put this very large graduation event together!

So what’s a graduation without a little beach ball thrown in the mix? How did they know? I love the beach. An outstanding rendition of the National Anthem was played by saxophone from Anthony Rivera and Jonathan Smith. All the dignitaries were there, Mayor John Linder, State Representative Kirkland, City Council, Board members, and school administrators. Also present were teachers, other staff, parents, friends, students, and supporters of the graduates. Remarks were given by Mayor Linder, President of CUSD Board of Directors Wanda Mann, Receiver Joseph Watkins, New Superintendent Gregory Shannon, Assistant principals Driggins and Hargrow. Great speeches were given by the Salutatorian Bryanna Belvin, Valedictorian Kameron Staples, and Guest Speaker and Chester alumni Garth Warner. The audience and graduates were stirred by a wonderful musical selection performed by Devvyn Holloway, wow!

After the diplomas were presented by Doctors Tony Watson and Laysear-Smith, the graduating seniors were dispersed to celebrate with family. The after party celebration was reportedly to be thrown by the Mayor’s team. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2013!
