Sunoco’s Empty Lot

Delcotimes picture

Such an eerie scene to see an empty parking lot at Sunoco in Marcus Hook, 291 is only one of my routes over the state line as I travel to and fro. It seems so strange to drive through and see this once full lot now empty and taped off like a crime scene, not a car insight. The one time refinery giant now lays idle while a buyer is still being sought.

Recently, U.S. Senator Robert Casey, D-Pa., met with Sunoco’s new CEO Brian MacDonald “to discuss the difficulties of the refinery closures and what needs to be done to locate buyers for the facilities as he expects the Senate hearings to be scheduled within the next two weeks.”

The discussion was based on the decision to close the refinery and “the ongoing process to sell the refineries or find alternative uses.” Alternative uses? I have got to admit “alternative uses” sounds intriguing but none were listed here.

“Casey said his office has had some contact with potential buyers but declined to elaborate further…At his level, he said he wants to explore a number of potential supports that the federal government can provide for a buyer.” A discussion will also take place on the impact the closure has had on the area.
