Students at Widener University host their own version of CAKE BOSS

Chester, Pa. -- Any baker or future baker is most likely a fan of Buddy Valastro – TLC’s Cake Boss. In a world of reality TV, reality cooking TV has always been a trend, but is becoming increasingly popular with a broad array of audiences with popular shows like Cake Boss, Cupcake Wars, and Next Great Baker.

Among such fans includes students at Widener University’s School of Hospitality Management, particularly those of student chapter of the National Association of Catering Executives and the Society of Food and Wine. Both organizations got together under the guidance of their professors Dr. Joy Dickerson and Dr. Kristen Riscinto-Kozub to host the school’s first annual Cake Boss contest, which will be held Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m.

Similar to the TLC program contestants will be submitting entries and they will not only be judged on appearance, but also taste. Judges include Peter Ehlin, director of dining services for ARAMARK, Ed Patton of Harrah’s Casino in Chester, and Pam Kingsland, owner of Pamcakes, a cupcake company in Philadelphia. There will also be a popularity vote from those in attendance. The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize and will be named the official “Widener Cake Boss,” along with an embroidered chef coat that says so.

Tickets are $7 for non-Widener students. This fee gets you a vote in the contest, two raffle tickets for prizes such as gift baskets and gift certificates, food, beverages, and of course, cake! Alcoholic beverages will also be available for purchase.
