(Chester, Pa., November 14, 2011) – Widener University held the inaugural Oskin Leadership Institute “Voices of Leadership” event on Thursday, November 10. The “Voices of Leadership” event celebrates The Oskin Leadership Institute’s mission to perpetuate Widener’s long-standing tradition of leadership and service by inspiring students to be strategic leaders and responsible citizens who possess the character, courage and competencies to achieve positive change throughout the world.
This year’s event profiled Joseph Neubauer, chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia-based Fortune 500 company ARAMARK. Neubauer, who immigrated to the United States alone at the age of 14 with rudimentary English skills, has been able to rise to the top of his field through hard work and dedication.
“In many respects, Mr. Neubauer epitomizes the values Widener University has nurtured since its founding in 1821,” said Widener University President James T. Harris III. “The Oskin Leadership Institute will help the university continue forging leaders of tomorrow in the mold of Joe Neubauer, challenging our students to develop the courage, character and core competencies needed to be effective leaders in the 21st century.”
The event, which featured an intimate question and answer session with Neubauer, was attended by civic and business leaders, including Ambassador David F. Girard-diCarlo and John J. Lynch, resident and chief executive officer of Main Line Health. During his on-stage conversation, Neubauer shared personal anecdotes relating to leadership, moral courage and integrity.
In the fall of 2008 with a $5 million gift from the family of David W. and JoEllen Oskin, Widener University established the Oskin Leadership Institute. The Oskin Leadership Institute will provide a variety of opportunities for Widener undergraduate and graduate students to develop their leadership capacities, including international opportunities focused on developing and practicing the global mindset skills needed to effect positive change throughout the world. In addition, the institute will work with corporations and other organizations to offer an executive leadership program, providing opportunities for corporate and non-profit executives to enhance their global leadership skills.
