Widener University and NBC 10 Team Up to Offer High School Leadership Awards

(Chester, Pa., September 22, 2011) – Widener University, recognized as one of the nation’s premier universities for civic engagement and applied leadership, today announced the launch of the Widener University High School Leadership Awards.  In partnership with WCAU-TV NBC10, this program will identify the region’s best young leaders and honor them for their outstanding contributions to their communities.

By encouraging principals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware to identify current high school juniors who exhibit strong leadership, Widener University and NBC10 aim to recognize students who not only demonstrate academic excellence but also, exceptional character.  This character can be expressed through participation in extracurricular activities, volunteering and/or demonstrating a positive influence on their peers.

Principals may nominate one student. Selected students will receive an opportunity to participate in a sponsored leadership experience at Widener University in spring 2012, attend a celebratory breakfast at the National Constitution Center, and be recognized for their community efforts by NBC10.  Most notably, winners will earn a scholarship of $20,000 should they enroll at Widener University for undergraduate studies.

“We are pleased to launch a program that honors high school students who pursue opportunities for community service and civic engagement in their daily lives and local communities,” said Widener University President, James T. Harris III.  “The mission of Widener University is rooted in preparing students for responsible citizenship through experiential and service learning.  By recognizing local students for their civic contributions, we not only reaffirm but extend that important mission.”
