Little Clippers Football Team

tryouts (dsbpix)

We have a brand new team in Chester, “Little Clippers”. The Chester Clippers Middle School Football team was out at the A Field. Coach Mark Bennett says this is his first year with the team. He was recruiting students from area middle schools, Main Street, Toby Farm, Village, and Columbus Elementary Schools to start a new football team. Forty plus boys tried out for the team. The upper elementary 7th and 8th grades configuration of students tried out because I’m told this is middle school although they are in an elementary school setting.

Workout (dsbpix)

Students worked on sprints and laps around the field to be selected to play for their first game in two weeks. The first game will be with either Penn Wood or Red Lion on October 13. They will be playing a total of 5 games for the season.

The goal is to get the team in football shape at this age so that when students get to high school, the game won’t be new to them. Students will already have football experience to play at the high school level. Good idea? By getting this experience, the high school Clippers football team will no longer start off with a green team when a star player like Anthony Davis graduates. This process is like the Biddy basketball players moving up to play basketball at the high school level. These students will be football ready and they are eager to do so. They enjoy the sport and playing football gives them something fun and productive to do after school. Playing team sports teaches how to be competitive while learning how to get along with others. Good luck Little Clippers. And remember to have fun out there. Be safe too!
