Chester High School Octagon Club Traveled To Washington, D. C.

By Guest Blogger Dr. Delores Y. Wright

L-R: 2nd Vice President Havana Dixon and 3rd Vice President Connie Irvin ( U.S. Capitol)

On April 7th, the day before the proposed federal government shutdown, the Octagon Club traveled to Washington, D.C. to gain a better understanding of our national government. The trip, which was coordinated by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia included students from the Bodine High School of International Affairs, Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School, Eastern Regional High School (NJ), the Renaissance Home School and Germantown Academy.  Officers Havana Dixon, Connie Irvin and their faculty advisor Dr. Delores Y. Wright were given the opportunity to tour the White House, the Capitol Building, live Congressional Sessions in the House and the Senate and the Embassy of Iraq.  They were not only given a sightseeing tour of the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial and the National Cherry Blossom Trees; they were also given the opportunity to view a DVD which exposed them to the inner workings of the State Department and the responsibilities of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  This learning experience was very informative and it gave all participants an appreciation for our national government and its place in world history.
