Despite Apparent Horrible Officiating Chester Survives

From Chester Clippers:

Chester (18-1) escapes Atlantic City with a 75-67 victory over the Plainfield (12-6) Cardinals. The teams faced off as the first game of a double header at the Battle By The Bay event held at Atlantic City High School. The Clippers used 6 players and held a 16-12 margin before the Cardinals hit a trey as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter at 16-15. The teams exchanged baskets to force a tie at 22 to begin the 2nd quarter. Chester then introduced the Cardinals to the "Clipper Press" and went on a 7-0 run forcing a Plainfield timeout at 3:26 with the score at 29-22. Coming out of the timeout, the Cardinals ran into "Clipper Press 1". This resulted in a 9-0 run and again timeout was called 1:13 and Plainfield now trailing 38-22. Over the remainder of the quarter Chester completed the tri-fecta with a 8-1 run to take a 46-23 lead at the half. Chester entertained the crowd using 7 players to combine for a 30 points outburst led by senior Maurice Nelson who dropped in 9 of his game high 20 points. Senior Lamon Church and sophomore Rondae Jefferson each contributed 6 points while junior Tymier Butler added 4, DeQuann Walker chipped in 3, sophomore Darius Robinson had 2 and junior Erikk Wright finished the scoring with 1. As the 3rd quarter began, you would've thought you had entered a time machine and was back in the "Disco Era" with all the whistles that were blowing. Chester found themselves on the wrong end of the referees attention and Plainfield reaped the benefits with 20 foul shots to the Clippers 2. The Cardinals managed to score 24 points with just 5 made baskets while the Clippers found their starters sitting along side their coaches. Chester was able to hold off their opponents as their lead was cut to 12 at 59-47 to end the 3rd quarter. In the fourth quarter the referees continued their assault on the Clippers. They hit Coach Yarbray with his first technical of the year for defending his players by stating "Don't cheat my kids". During that same sequence, captain Maurice Nelson was awarded his first technical of the year by that same official when he as the official stated "talked back to me". I'm sorry but the rules state the captain is allowed to speak to the referees during game. The same referees allowed the incorrect player to knowing shoot a foul shot for a player who wasn't as proficient as he was. Plainfield was forced to foul hoping the Clippers would miss their shots but sophomore Rondae Jefferson knocked down three in a row giving him 10 points and sealing the victory for the Clippers. Rondae would finish with a double double has he hauled in a career high 13 rebounds. Senior Lamon Church would once again fill the stat sheet with 3 assists, 1 block, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. The teamwork that has carried the Clippers to this point was evident in this contest with 14 assists on 26 made baskets. And, it was the strength of the bench with 10 Clippers seeing action that allowed them the prevail.

Chester returns to league action on Tuesday, February 8th when they travel to Glen Mills to take on the Battlin' Bulls in a 3:30 afternoon affair.

  1. This was the worse officiating I have ever seen of a chs team. It was horrible to say the least, but our team hung in there & continued fighting as a team & came away with the win. Congrats to the coaches & team for a outstanding job & to Ms.Bee for her fair & truthful reporting.
