Delco Historical Society to open Black History Month exhibit Sunday

From Delcotimes.com:

In celebration of Black History Month during February, “Enslavement To Enlightenment” a new exhibit at the Delaware County Historical Society Museum, 408 Avenue of the States in Chester, will open with a free gala celebration from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6. The public is welcome.

The event will focus on artist Van Buren Payne’s story and Twyla Simpkins, who was born and raised in Chester and has collected personal treasures reflecting her life and experiences as a child growing up in Chester, through her years as a student at Chester High School and college as well as her many years teaching in the Chester High School. Twyla still maintains her leading role in the community by heading the reawakening and restructuring of the Chester YWCA today. She, too, will join the celebration and share her insights about each and every treasure she has collected.

Everyone is welcome to come by and hear the inspiring stories of these two outstanding members of the Chester Black Community, their trials and triumphs as they generously share their personal stories and memories.

Refreshments, tours, filming by NBC Channel 10 and opportunities for private interviews will be available as the community comes together to celebrate their achievements through their art and memorabilia.

The special Black History Month exhibit will continue throughout the month of February during regular viewing hours on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Van Buren Payne will offer free inter-generational art lessons at the museum 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12 and Feb. 26. Everyone is welcome to learn under the caring, professional guidance of Van Buren Payne and find that hidden artist within.
