Renowned Jazz Musician Joe Chambers at Chester High School

Jazz Drummer Joe Chambers in Chester High School's Band Room today

Internationally known jazz musician Joe Chambers will perform with his group M’Boom tomorrow morning in Chester High School auditorium at 9:00 am. After the concert, he will also teach a Masters class to the band students. He was a 1960 graduate of Chester High School. He became famous as a jazz drummer. He currently lives in Wilmington, North Carolina where he is a distinguished Professor of Jazz in the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) since the 2008-2009 academic year.

I met with Mr. Chambers this afternoon as he took a walking tour of CHS band and stage area to set up audio and band equipment for his concert. Mr. Chambers said he came to Chester to “spread the word of percussion and percussion language.” He is interested in creating a Chester Jazz Festival in 2011 or 2012. He believes it is “time for Africa”. He is investigating rhythms of a tribe in Northern Senegal, a secret tribe of percussionist. His recent CD, Horace to Max, is number one on the play list. This should be a great concert.
