Growing up, I do not have a clear vision of the Beatles. I do have a better vision of the Monkees because I watched some of the shows and that’s how I knew of Davy Jones and the other Monkees. So it was sad to hear of his sudden passing this past week. The Monkees had a fun TV show and great music.

Chester Clippers Boys Basketball team won over Lower Merion in a very close call near the end of the game at Villanova University Friday night. This game makes the 53^rd straight wins for the Clippers. For me it was the classic game played by the Clippers. Clippers were up 17 to 9 in the first quarter; Then 26 to 16 in the second quarter. By the third quarter Clippers still had a comfortable lead of 43 to 31. I was not worried. But in the final quarter, Clippers sent my heart racing. Lower Merion was gaining control of the game. The scores narrowed within 5 points, 55-50. Oh, no. Too close for me. The game reminded me of the State Championship game last year which was a nail biter. OMG! I am so glad they won 61 to 53.

Billy Crystal did a great job as usually of hosting the Oscars and tastefully done in memoriam.

No, Tom Cruise did not win anything. He was not nominated nor was ‘Mission Impossible’ but he did present the Best Picture Award and was in a cameo.

I dozed off when the Best Actor Award came on so I missed the French guy (Jean Dujardin) who won.

The Artist? Best Picture, I honestly don’t have any plans to watch it.

Viola Davis did not win Best Actress. She was up against some stiff competition with Meryl Streep who won the award. Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress in her role for ‘The Help’. I will watch ‘The Help’.

Best surprise: Honorary Oscar awards to Oprah Winfrey and James Earl Jones.

Worst Part: Sasha Baron Cohen as the Dictator who dumped ashes on Ryan Seacrest. Ryan was really well put together in his Tux. If you dress up to go to the Oscars, you don’t go to get messed up. Not Cool!

Angelina Jolie should gain some weight. Not sure what that leg thing was about.

The Academy Awards have always been a big deal for me but not this year. I usually keep up with most if not all the movies. But I have slacked off on a few pleasures because of my new assignment. It has just sucked the life out of me. I can equate this experience to maybe being nailed to a cross or having a bunch of leeches stuck on you. Better still, I recently watched Rock Center with Brian Williams in which there was a report on rhino poaching in Africa. Poachers were cutting off the rhino’s horns and leaving them to die; Very traumatic to say the least.

So I have watched no Oscar movies this year. If I remember the only time I went to the movies was to watch Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol in IMAX at the King of Prussia Theater. I liked the movie so I am picking it for best picture, Tom Cruise for best actor, Paula Patton for best actress (sort of), and the others for supporting roles. Thumbs up for best stunts and effects especially seen in IMAX. All in fun but Tom Cruise is a phenomenon in the Mission Impossible movies.

I may tune in to see Billy Crystal host. He does a great job hosting. My top hosts are Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, and Conan O’Brien. I may also tune in to see Viola Davis win Best Actress for “The Help”. I have seen her movies. She can act for real. The best part of the Oscars is watching Fashion Police the day after. Joan Rivers makes fashion funny for the E channel.

Anita Brown, teacher at Main Street School in Chester, has put on her Black Wax Museum display for the second year in honor of Black History Month. If you recall, Ms. Brown is one of the teachers honored last year with the 2011 Excellence in Teaching Award (Click Here). Ms. Brown said, “In celebration of Black History Month the Black Wax Museum let the students experience a mock museum.”

The Chester Youth Council is a group of young men and women between the ages of 12 and 22, who collectively represent youth voice within the Chester Youth Collaborative and throughout the city of Chester. The mission of the Youth Council is to change perceptions of and about Chester, youth while inspiring civic engagement and youth advocacy among other youth in the community. In keeping with our mission, it is with great pleasure that we celebrate the lives and contributions of Chester youth with the Chester Youth Choice Awards, and we’ve got 5 questions for you:

I am Ready for Lent

I was reading Heron’s Nest, Phil Heron’s Blog “Ready for Lent” and found it amusing. “I have changed my views on Lent a bit. Now, instead of giving something up, I try to do something that I wouldn't normally do”, he wrote. So he is swearing off swearing for lent. I have also changed my views on lent. No longer am I giving up on chocolates. I have up the ante a bit. I am not giving up anything. Instead I am adding exercise. I have slacked off from exercising for months. So to get myself back into an exercise routine, I must do some type of exercise every day. Just hope I have the time to do it. No I am making the time to do it. “Just do it!”

Chester Clippers makes it 50 Straight

Story from Dave Burman:

After a 59-31 victory over the visiting 16th seeded Methacton Warriors, the #1 seeded Clippers (24-0) earned a spot in their amazing 20th consecutive State Championship Tournament. The win extended Chester's winning streak to 50 games and placed Coach Yarbray in 6th place of Chester basketball Coaches with his 95th win. He surpasses Juan Baughn who compiled a 94-16 record from 1970-1974. The win also extended Chester's District Tournament Home Win Streak to 56 games.

Senior forward Erikk Wright led the way in the 1st quarter scoring 8 of his game high 16 points as the Clippers fought off the Warriors to the tune of 16-12. Chester used aggressive defensive and their bench to hold off their competitors 13-5 in the 2nd quarters. The Clippers used six different players in accumulating their point total with 8 of those points coming from their bench. The result was Chester - 29, Methacton - 19 at the half. Chester maintained their defensive pressure limiting the Warriors to a mere 2 points in the entire 3rd period of play as Erikk Wright dropped in 6 more points. The Clippers now led 40-19 after 3 period of play. The Clippers once again spread the wealth in the final period using nine players to score their final 19 points in the contest. The Warriors continued to fight matching their first quarter total of 12 points for the final score of 59-31.

Chester final five points in the contest were scored by the two player who were promoted to Varsity off the Junior Varsity team. Darrell Nicholson drained a trey from the top of the key and he followed that with an alley-oop (in traffic) to high flying Diamonte Reason.

The Clippers used 12 players in accumulating their point total with only Wright finishing with double figures. The other scorers were: Richard Granberry (9), Rashan DeJarnette (7), Darius Robinson & Shanier Cottman - 5 points apiece, Kareem Robinson (4), Rondae Jefferson & Nicholson - 3 points, Tymier Butler, Reason & Zimir Geiger - 2 points and finally Tavaune Griffin completed the scoring with 1 point. The always in motion, 5'8" Cottman achieved a career high by hauling in 7 rebounds in the contest. While Jefferson only managed to score 3 points, he did, however, lead the team with 5 assists.

Chester's Quarter-finals opponent in the tournament will be the 9th seeded Norristown Eagles who advanced after defeating the 8th seeded Pennsbury Falcons. The game will be played on Friday, February 24th at the Clip Joint with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.

Widener University Names Paula Silver Dean of School of Human Service Professions

Chester, Pa. – Widener University announces the appointment of Paula T. Silver of Radnor, Pa. as dean of the School of Human Service Professions. Silver has served as acting dean of the school since July 2011, replacing Stephen C. Wilhite who currently serves as provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.

Silver assumes leadership of one of the university’s largest schools, hosting 1,219 undergraduate and graduate students and 60 faculty in the Center for Education, Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, Center for Social Work Education and the Institute for Physical Therapy Education.

Previously, Silver served as director of the Center for Social Work Education for 14 years. She presided over a period of major expansion in enrollment in the Master of Social Work program, and successfully guided the social work faculty in its development of the university’s first Ph.D. program. She joined Widener as an assistant professor of social work in 1992.

“Dean Silver is recognized nationally as an innovative leader in social work education and was one of the earliest advocates for Widener’s current civic engagement mission,” said Widener University President James T. Harris III. “She has distinguished herself on campus as a collegial academic administrator who is committed to promoting interdisciplinary programming and expanded educational opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.”

Silver served on the planning committee for Vision 2015, the university’s current strategic plan, and has been a lead coordinator of the university’s partnership with Chongqing Technology and Business University in Chongqing, China. She currently serves as chair of the Widener Partnership Charter School board of trustees, and as member of the Chester Education Foundation board of directors.

Silver received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Chicago, a master of social work from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctor of philosophy in social work from Bryn Mawr College.

Last weekend my Valentine’s started at Charlie B’s with a pre-Valentine's Dinner Party, a very nice event given by the owner for friends and family. Last night there was a post Valentine’s event at the Andre Café Acoustique. The night was filled with great Jazz music featuring Anthony Womack, Principal of the Village Chester Upland School. The room was full with people who took advantage of the special discount for Chester Upland employees but music was the common denominator which brought the room alive. Anthony Womack was the principal of music on trumpet. The event also featured his wife, soloist Shiron Denise, whose rendition of “Black Butterfly” wowed the audience. Widener’s FreshBaked Theatre Company to Present The Little Mermaid

Children’s Theater Benefits Chester Food Pantry

Chester, Pa. (Feb. 15, 2012) — Widener University’s FreshBaked Theatre Company will present “The Little Mermaid” for young audiences on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1 at 2 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium on Widener’s Main Campus in Chester, Pa. The play is for ages 7 and up and has a running time of 50 minutes.

The FreshBaked Theatre Company will also hold special performances of “The Little Mermaid” on Thursday, April 12 at 10 a.m. and Friday, April 13 at 1 p.m. in Widener’s Alumni Auditorium for local schools and homeschooling groups only. Reservations for these performances are required and can be made by e-mailing ljcocchiarale@mail.widener.edu.

Admission to all shows is by free will cash donation, with all funds benefiting the Bernardine Center Food Pantry. Suggested donation is $1 per person.

Director Lisa Eckley Cocchiarale challenges the audience to experience the familiar tale of “The Little Mermaid” in a new way, setting the action on a beach. The mermaid saves a mysterious human who falls from his ship in a vicious storm. When she realizes that she cannot live without this man, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch and is granted legs in exchange for her lovely voice. To break the spell, the mermaid must make the man truly fall in love with her. This adaptation is by award-winning writer Mike Kenny.

“The Little Mermaid” features Widener University graduate student Christina Clements,’12, of Media, Pa., and undergraduate students Autumn Heisler, ’15, of Allentown, Pa.; Brett Hudson, ’14, of Glen Mills, Pa.; Chara Kramer, ’14, of Mount Laurel, N.J.; and Viraga Perera, ’15, of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Technical director is Peter Castagna.

Since 2001, the FreshBaked Theatre Company has promoted Widener’s mission of civic engagement with quality drama for children and their families in the greater Chester area. The ensemble strives to produce thought-provoking plays that challenge both young and adult audience members. “Our mission is to present inventive drama for young minds and the people who nurture them,” said Cocchiarale.

Chester, Pa. -- Jill B. Jones, co-author of Casino Women: Courage in Unexpected Places, will share insights from her pioneering look at the female face of corporate gaming at Widener University.

Sponsored by the Center for Social Work Education and the Phi Alpha Honors Society at Widener University, Jones will give a presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in Lathem Hall (at the corner of 13^th and Potter Streets), which will be free and open to the public and the Widener community.

Jones will tell the story of women casino workers’ transformation and their success in creating a union able to face off against global gaming giants. Attendees are encouraged to join in a discussion with Jones about the relevance of her book to the communities in which they live and work.

Valentine’s Day Dumb and a Waste of Money?

I had to get my Valentine’s in before I posted this story. My Valentine’s Day started at 12:35 am with a text simply wishing me a Happy Valentine’s Day; another early morning wish from a friend; a heart shaped donut; candies and card; a strawberry cupcake with heart shaped lollipop; and a few more shout outs. This has been a very simple Valentine’s Day for me but very nice. None of the above were dumb or a waste of money.

This is a must read story about Valentine’s Day. So far the best I have read about Valentine’s Day, very funny stuff.

Valentine's Day Is Dumb and You're Wasting Money (MainStreet)

Valentine's Day is best illustrated in one series of actions: Withdraw from an ATM what you'd usually spend on date night, withdraw that amount again, show it to the person you love most and then flush the entire sum down the nearest toilet.

That's basically the way every U.S. consumer has spent Valentine's Day since Esther Howland imposed the first mass-market Valentine's Day cards on the American public during the 1840s. Now the whole sordid, red-painted affair is a nearly $18 billion industry that trails only Thanksgiving ($30.5 billion) and Christmas ($135 billion) in holiday spending, according to IBISWorld. That's almost $3 billion more than what's spent on Mother's Day. Sorry, mom, but they just met at a bar two months ago and neither of them are getting any younger.

That spending is only going up this year. The National Retail Federation estimates that American suckers ... er ... lovers are about to spend an average of $128 a pop to avoid getting the silent treatment or a stern dressing down. That's a nearly 8.5% increase from last year and includes an average $37 worth of flowers and $72 for a night out. It's a heart-shaped box of lovestruck spending that hides a rancid center of markups and emotional extortion.

Widener to Host Daylong Conference on Men's Relationships

(Monday, February 13, 2012) Widener University will host “Deepening Men’s Relationships,” a conference examining the importance of emotional intimacy in men’s lives, on Saturday, March 17. The conference is open to both men and women who have either a professional or personal interest in making changes in men’s lives. It will address challenges faced by men and approaches to working with them to enhance their relationships with other men and women and their experiences as fathers, sons and partners.

“Our culture has historically created a model of masculinity that emphasizes independence and competition and dismisses the importance of emotional intelligence and emotional intimacy,” said Dr. Robert Heasley, therapist and president of the American Men’s Studies Association and one of the conference organizers.

Dr. Robert Garfield, another conference organizer whose therapy practice has included a focus on men and their relationships, further noted, “Denying men these qualities can affect everything from their mental and physical health to their parenting and everyday relationships. The effects can also be seen in instances of bullying in our schools and violence on our city streets.”

The conference will run March 17, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., on Widener University’s Main Campus in Lathem Hall, 13th and Potter streets, Chester, Pa. Cost is $95 or $75 for students. Hank Mandel, co-producer of the documentary, "Five Friends: No Man Can Make the Journey Alone," is the conference’s featured speaker. His film will be featured earlier in the week on March 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute.

During part two of the conference, participants can join breakout sessions to address various topics that are important to working with (or being) men. Topics include “Sexually Abused Males and Recovery,” “Raising Emotionally Intelligent Boys: Parental, Educational and Clinical Awareness,” and “Men in Therapy and Therapeutic Men’s Groups.”

In addition to Heasley and Robert Garfield, other conference co-planners include Isaac Garfield, a social worker and family-based therapist, and Jake Kriger, a therapist who runs therapeutic men’s groups. Other professionals helping to administer sessions include Dr. Betsy Crane, director of Graduate Programs in Human Sexuality at Widener, and Ted Glackman, director of the J.J. Peters Institute in Philadelphia for sexual abuse and recovery.

Widener University is co-sponsoring the conference through its program in women and gender studies and graduate programs in human sexuality, psychology and social work. Heasley is an adjunct professor for Widener’s Graduate Programs in Human Sexuality. He also teaches full time at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has a therapy practice at Building Bridges in Media, Pa.

Actor & Director Bill Duke to speak at “Dark Girls” Movie Premiere at Widener University

Known for his height, Duke is a familiar face from the 1976 film, Car Wash and standing alongside Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard, among other things. He recently appeared in X-Men. He has also directed a number of films including A Rage in Harlem and Sister Act II. More recently, Duke has been working on documentaries, including Dark Girls.

Dark Girls is a story that focuses on how women of a “darker hue” perceive themselves, as well as how the public perceives them and the emotional toll it has.

The screening and Q&A will be held on Tuesday, February 21 at 4 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium, located off of 14th Street between Walnut Street and Melrose Avenue in Chester, Pa.

In recent weeks, we have lost three entertainers in the music industry. We lost a beautiful voice in music, when we heard of the passing of Whitney Houston. So sad
