FreshBaked Theatre Company brings Scottish myth to life

performance to benefit hungry families

Widener Press Release
Widener University's FreshBaked Theatre Company will present The Seal Wife on Sunday, Feb. 4 and Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium, located on Widener’s Main Campus in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Admission to all performances of The Seal Wife is free, but the suggested donation is $2 per person, with the proceeds benefiting outreach social service agency The Bernadine Center and local food pantries in Chester.
The Seal Wife, by playwright Brendan Murray, is a poetic retelling of an ancient Scottish myth. In the story, a fisherman falls in love with a Selkie, a seal who turns into a woman during the full moon. When she transforms into a woman and sheds her seal skin, the fisherman steals her hide so that she cannot transform back into a seal. She is stuck in human form and agrees to marry the man. Together they have many children, but the sea still calls to the Selkie. She has to decide between the life she has made on land, and her true home in the sea.
The Seal Wife is directed Lisa Eckley Cocchiarale. The cast features Widener University students Luis J. Aguilar, Anna Clayton, Nathan Mirando, Alex Ross, and Jared Zimmerman. Technical direction is provided by Daniel Castagna.
FreshBaked Theatre Company’s mission is to provide “inventive drama for young minds, and those who nurture them.” Since 2003, the student ensemble has produced classics, myths, Shakespeare, and folktales – all adapted to engage the curious minds of young audiences. As part of Widener University's mission of community service and civic engagement, the company “pays it forward” by distributing 100 percent of cash donations to local food banks and other aid organizations within the community.
A matinee for schools and homeschool students also takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 13. This performance is by reservation only.
Contact Cocchiarale at ljcocchiarale@widener.edu for more information. Running time is 45 minutes.
