Chester
- 50, Abington - 53
Chester's (4-2) comeback attempt fell short
as they fell to the Abington Galloping Ghost (8-2) 53-50 in the nightcap of the
12th Annual Pete Nelson Classic on the campus of Widener University. The
Clippers failed to hit their mark in the first quarter scoring just 9 points.
It was the first time this season they scored less than ten points in any
quarter. While on the other hand the Galloping Ghost seemed as though they
couldn't miss pouring in 20 points to put the Clippers in a 9-20 hole. Seniors
Ahrod Carter and Jamar Sudan led the slight Clipper push in the 2nd quarter
scoring 4 points apiece coupled with Chester limiting Abington to 11 points to
trail by10 at the half. Chester - 21, Abington - 31. Defensive miscues and
turnovers allow Abington to once again take control of the game in the 3rd
quarter as they stretched their lead to 14 points to end the quarter. Chester
now trailed 47-33. While being out sized in the paint for the first time this
season, Sudan and Jordan Camper made their presence felt in the final quarter.
Sudan would score 6 of his team high 15 points while Camper would contribute 4
of his 12 points. The Clippers demonstrated their patented defensive pressure
and with Camper controlling the paint limiting their opponents to single shot attempts.
The results were seen as the Clippers held the Ghost scoreless for the first 5:50 and
now trailing by only 6 points, 47-41. Abington finally ended the drought
scoring from the free throw line at the 2:09 mark to push the lead to seven points, 48-41. A
dunk by Camper at 1:29
cut the lead to 5 points at 48-43. After exchanging buckets another Camper dunk
off an assist from Ahrod Carter made the score 50-47 with 23.2 seconds
remaining in the contest. Abington was able to connect on 1 of 2 free throws to
gain a 4 point advantage before Carter drained a trey to bring the Clippers
within one 51-50 with 5.6 seconds remaining. Abington would connect on two free
throws and a final heave by Chester would fall short.
Camper rejected two shots and cleaned the
glass with six of his team high 12 rebounds in the final quarter. Camper
finished the night with another double-double by also scoring 12 points. Carter
jointed Camper and Sudan in double figures with 11 points on the night. With 10
assists on 20 made baskets, this marked the sixth time this season that at
least half of Chester's made baskets have come off assists. Junior Brian
Randolph III fell just short of double figures with 8 points including hitting
on 3 of 4 free throw attempts. Rahmaad DeJarnette and Jah'meir Springfield
completed the Chester scoring with 2 points apiece.
Chester will return to action tomorrow
evening, December 30th, and close out the year 2016 when they take on the
Pennsbury Falcons of the Suburban One League. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
