Report by Terry Thomas
The 9th seeded Chester Clippers (20-6) snapped the
4th seeded Ridley Green Raiders (24-2) 14 game winning streak and move on to
the District-1 Championship game with a 74-62 victory at Temple University's
Liacouras Center. Chester will take on the #2 seeded Plymouth Whitemarsh
Colonials who defeated Lower Merion in the other semi-final contest. The
Clippers scored early and often in this contest and after briefly relinquishing
the lead in the second quarter 22-23; Deshawn Hinson's sweet finger-roll at 4:43 to
put the Clippers back on top to stay. Junior Jamar Sudan scored on two
consecutive old fashioned three-point plays in the opening quarter to establish
what the Green Raiders were in store for the rest of the evening. Sudan
finished with a co-team high of 16 points but added 10 rebounds to add another
double double to his resume. Khaleeq Campbell added 5 of his 12 points in the
opening quarter and the Clippers had a 20-17 lead. After the Raiders made their
brief run, Deshawn Hinson caught fire for the Clippers scoring 8 of his 15
points and Chester pushed their margin to 6 points to end the first half, Chester
- 37, Ridley - 31. The Clippers started the 3rd quarter with a 9-2 run sparked
by 5 points from Hinson forcing Ridley to call their 3rd timeout at 5:25 and
trailing 46-33. Coming out of the time senior Stanley Davis would score 6 of
his co-team high 16 points to prevent any thoughts of a Ridley win. Davis also
finished with a double double and tying his career high of 11 rebounds. The
Clippers increased their lead to 11 points to close the 3rd quarter at 56-45.
Senior Maurice Henry added a nice hook shot in the fourth for 2 of his 6 points
and the team began to look ahead to Friday's
Championship game.
The game on Friday will mark Coach Yarbray's 5th Championship Game appearance. In his previous 4 appearance he brought gold back to 9th & Barclay winning. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m.
Chester boxscore: Davis (16), Sudan (16), Hinson (15), Campbell (12), Henry (6), Carter (5), Bailey-Green (2), Jones (2)
