Chester Boys Basketball maintains first place in Del Val after clipping Chichester

Chester - 78, Chichester - 55

Report by Terry Thomas

Chester (11-6, 6-0) maintained first place in the Del Val after clipping the Chichester Eagles 78-55 at the Clip Joint. The Eagles soared into the Fred Pickett Jr Gymnasium at 9th & Barclay Streets and the Clippers were looking up at a 8-2 deficit when Coach Yarbray called for a timeout at 5:54 to settle his troops. The Clippers responded offensively led by senior point guard Khaleeq Campbell and his 7 first quarter points. Fellow seniors Stanley Davis and Maurice Henry each contributed 4 first quarter points as the Clippers outscored the Eagles 17-14 to trail by 22-19 at the end of the quarter.  In typical Chester fashion the reserves started the second quarter and produced 10 of the teams 15 points and the Clippers went into intermission trailing just 35-34. Jamal Jones and Larry Yarbray Jr. led the way with 3 points apiece as seven different players combined for the team point production in the period. The rest in the 2nd quarter coupled with half-time game the Clippers starters just the wind it needed to fuel their sails which resulted in a 10-0 burst to start the 3rd quarter. Their fresh legs, inside height and shorted rotation provided the added defensive pressure needed to hold the Eagles to just 5 third quarter points. It was the starters time to shine producing 16 of the team's 18 points led by senior Marquis Collins who made his presence felt inside to the tune of 10 of his 12 points. Campbell slashed to the baskets for an old fashioned three point play enroute to a team high 13 points. Chester totally dominated the board in the second half of this contest limiting their opponent to no second chance points. In the fourth quarter it was Chester's big man Maurice Henry's time to shine as he dropped in 6 of his 10 points including a couple monster put back dunks. Maurice filled in every block on the stat sheet finishing the afternoon with 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, 4 blocked shots, 2 assists, 1 steal and he forced 2 Eagles turnovers. Senior Jahmi Bailey-Green added some entertainment with 2 crowd pleasing drives and he also went 2 for 2 from the line for 6 of his 8 points. But it was on the defensive end where he proved the most effective holding Chichester's top scorer to just one second half field goal. Davis added four more points in the final period for 11 points as Chester put four players in double-figures. The Clippers sailed away from the Eagles to the tune of 26-15 in the final period to seal the victory.

Marquis Collins finished the contest with another double-double after collecting a career high 15 rebounds. He also had one monster blocked shot.

The Clippers are slated to participate in a Hoop Group Event at Parkland H.S. on Sunday afternoon but the weekend snow storm may cancel that event.

The remaining four games on Chester regular season schedule will be Del Val League contests with the first three to be played at the Clip Joint. First up will be the Penn Wood Patriots on Tuesday, January 26th followed by Glen Mills on Thursday, January 28 and finally Academy Park on Tuesday, February 2nd.

The final regular season game will be played away on Thursday, February 4th at Chichester.
