The Chester High School Basketball team overcame a devastating loss from the Pete Nelson Holiday Classic by beating rival Penn Wood 65 to 45 in a game dedicated to Coach Fred Pickett who recently passed away. The Chester High School Gym was officially dedicated as the Coach Fred Pickett, Jr. Gymnasium. The Gym was filled with Coach Pickett’s family and friends. Wanda Pickett, widow, said “The tribute speaks to Fred and how he lived.” Chester Upland School District Superintendent Gregory Shannon officiated over the dedication of the gym. The key to the city was presented to the family by Mayor John Linder. Representative Thaddeus Kirkland presented the family with a gavel and plaque. Mrs. Pickett said whelming up with tears, “My family is overwhelmed by what is said and what was done.” She thanked her family, her church family, and all the people who came out to the game.
