Chester Boys Basketball edges William Penn

Chester Wins Thriller in York by Terry Thomas

After dropping the first game of the season, the Clippers (4-1) won their fourth consecutive game, a 49-48 thriller over the host William Penn York Bearcats (5-2). Junior forward Marquis Collins rebounded Keyonte Watkins missed shot and dropped in a 8 footer to give Chester the lead with 1.6 seconds on the clock. Coming out of their final timeout, 6'8" junior Maurice Henry blocked the Bearcats inbound pass out of bounds as the clock ran down to 0.9 seconds. The next inbounded pass landed without a shot attempt. Chester was frigid to begin the contest falling behind 0-6 in the first 49 seconds of the contest. Sophomore Jamar Sudan used 6 of this team high 10 points in the first quarter to keep the contest close. The Clippers found themselves trailing York 11-15 at the end of the first quarter. Junior Khaleeq Campbell started the 2nd quarter with consecutive steals and baskets to tie the game at 15. Jahmi Bailey and Stanley Davis each knocked down treys and four points inside by Henry allow the Clippers to tie the contest going into intermission at 25. Chester went inside-out to begin the 3rd quarter with Henry scoring first followed by five points from Campbell and a basket by Sudan resulting in a 9-2 run and a 34-27 Clippers lead at the 5:24 mark. Junior Juanir Moore scored off an offensive rebound and Watkins knocked down a trey to end the quarter. Chester - 41, York - 35. York responded with a 8-0 run of their own to start the final quarter before another trey from Watkins put the Clippers back in front 44-43 with 3:48 remaining in the contest. Timeout Chester. Sudan stole the inbounded pass for a bucket and a three point Clipper lead 46-43. The Bearcats answered with a 5-0 run and the lead 48-46 and 1:13 remaining. Timeout York. Watkins hauled in 1 of his career high 9 rebounds and was fouled on his shot attempt. He connected on the first the Clippers now trailed 48-47 with 17 seconds on the clock. Timeout York. His missed on his second attempt but the Bearcats knocked the ball out of bounds. Chester inbounded the ball to Sudan who drove to the basket, missed the shot but fought for the rebound. Jump Ball was called. Possession - Chester. Timeout York - 10.7 seconds. Chester inbounds to Watkins, he drives to the basket, Sudan tips the missed shot back to Collins who knocks down the shot for the win.

Khaleeq Campbell finished with 9 points, 3 steals. Watkins added 8 points, 3 assists and 3 steals along with his 9 rebounds. Henry contributed a 8 points, a career high 4 blocks and 10 rebounds. Collins ended the night with four points and four rebounds.

Chester will return to action of Tuesday, December 23rd when they host the Reading Red Knights at the Clip Joint. JV tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 with the Varsity to follow.
