Congratulations
to Chester High School Class of 2014. This was the one hundred fortieth
commencement ceremony held on Friday, June 6th, 2014 at the Athletic
Field. It was an absolutely beautiful day for a graduation. Lots of families,
friends and well-wisher came out to celebrate with the graduates. Encouraging
remarks were made by Receiver Joe Watkins, Superintendent Gregory Shannon, Chester
High School Principal Constance McAlister, and STEM Principal Alexis Greaves.
Mayor Linder and Representative Kirkland also spoke briefly to the graduating
class. Salutatorians Kyla Funk (STEM) and Karen Del Solar-Ovando (CHS), and
Valedictorians Kamri Staples (STEM) and Felix Revera motivated their peers to
help change the world. Dr. Donald Thomas, salutatorian from the class of 2007
gave the commencement address. It was great to see Donald coming back to the
school to encourage students in their journey forward. He spoke about his
struggles to complete his doctorate, “I was not expected to complete my
six-year doctoral program. I struggled to make people see not what they wanted
me to be but to see the doctor that I strived to be.” Dr. Thomas advised the graduating
class that “no city, no school, no circumstance is an excuse not to succeed. There is no limit to what you can accomplish and the world is much bigger than
Chester, Pennsylvania.”
