Widener University Art Gallery Hosting Photography Exhibitions

Widener University Art Gallery Hosts Photography Exhibition
of the Works of Milton Rogovin and 20th Century Masters

One exhibition examines the strength and dignity of working people all over the world through the camera lens of Milton Rogovin, the other highlights texture, light, and the interplay of these qualities in the work of the 20th century masters of photography. Both will be at the Widener University Art Gallery from November 9 through December 14.

Picture Man:  Photographs by Milton Rogovin documents the poor and dispossessed, from mining families in Appalachia, Chile, Cuba, and Zimbabwe to steelworkers as husbands and fathers, wives and mothers. Rogovin’s images reveal intensely personal connections with “the forgotten ones,” their pleasures and pastimes, and his deep desire for a more just and equal society.

Organized by the Rogovin family and Syracuse Cultural Workers, the 50 photos that make up the exhibition are high quality reproductions with the intention to make Rogovin’s social documentary photographs available for larger communities.

Art in Detail:  Twentieth Century Masters of Photography, highlights a selection of photographs ranging from the early 1900s to contemporary times. These images explore texture, light, and the interplay of these qualities in the work of established and emerging masters of photography.

Working primarily in black and white film, the artists in the exhibition possesses the technical skills required to work in photography. In addition, they have an aesthetic “eye” to investigate and explore the environment around them in order to discover new and unique perspectives on the world. Consisting of 30 photographs, the exhibition is organized by the Syracuse University Art Collection.

The gallery will host an open house for the exhibition from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, November 21. The gallery, which is free and open to the public, is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and.  The gallery will be closed November 28 to 30 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
