It’s All About Science at Chester

Science Fair Press Release
Chester High
School held its annual science fair and expo on Monday June 3rd. Entries
focused on many subjects including culinary arts, biology, chemistry, physical
science, cosmetology, botany, and biochemistry. Projects were submitted by
students of all grade levels and abilities and were judged by Associate Principal
Ms. Linda Hargrow and Project GRAD campus coordinators Ms. Yvette Dickenson and
Nafatari Manigault. The expo was coordinated by Dr. Delores Wright and the
Science Department under the advisement of Assistant to the Superintendent Dr.
Rachel Foster and Chester High School Principal Mr. Will Towson.
The winning
projects from this year’s science fair will be eligible for the Delaware
Country Science Fair. The best displays will be presented at the Delaware
Valley Science Fair which showcases projects from Pennsylvania, Delaware and
New Jersey. The ultimate goal of future fairs is to have local winners gain
entry into the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair which allows
students do presentations in front of representatives from some of the world’s
largest technological corporations.
The first
place entry titled “The Effect of Different Colored Lights on Plant Growth” was
submitted by Vicente Saldana, Jonathan Adorno, Stefany Rivera, Jennifer Gomez,
and Aaliyah Stewart from Mr. Ryan Willis’ class. The second place entry titled
“Heat Transfer” was submitted by LaKenya Johnson, Jessica Vega, Naisha Burgos,
and Shikeria Lumpkin from Ms. Lenora Scurry’s class. The third place entry
titled “An Investigation into Osmosis Using Grapes” was submitted by Kenya
Guenther, Diamond Hudnell, Felix Rivera, and Ayanna Fitzgerald from Dr. Delores
Wright’s class. The fourth place entry titled “Energy Absorption” was submitted
by Christian Boneu, Amelia Perez, and Hakeem Linehan from Ms. Scurry’s class.
The two projects that tied for fifth place were titled “I Scream for Ice Cream”
, submitted by Naisha Clark and Kareem Dale from Ms. Veronica Blalock’s class,
and “Most Acidic Drinks”, Dayana Grandberry, Waleef Garrett, Naisha Fernandez,
and Tamyra Rykard from Ms. Scurry’s class. Special thanks are extended to all
the participants in this year’s science fair and expo.
