Kony 2012: Have you seen it?

“KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.”

This 29 minutes documentary has over 50 million views since it has been posted a couple days ago. And I get excited when any of my video views hit 100. In World Studies, we are heavy into the study of Africa right now. Kony will give us some knowledgeable current events information. You can’t help but feel for Jacob, a young African, who lost his brother. This heart wrenching true story brings us the horrors that are happening in Africa.

Joseph Kony is at the top of the International Criminal list. “In 1987 he took over leadership of an existing rebel group and renamed it the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).” When Kony ran out of fighters, he started kidnapping children to become soldiers in his army. “In its 26-year history, the LRA has abducted more than 30,000 children and displaced at least 2.1 million people.” The LRA has moved the war from Uganda to Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan.

According to "Invisible Children" Co-founder and Director of “Kony 2012” Jason Russell these are the goals for his 2012 campaign:

Ugandan Military has to find Kony.
Technology and training are needed to track him in the vast jungle.
The U.S government has to deploy administrators which they have done.
In order for people to care, they must know who Kony is so he must be posted everywhere.
The dream is for Kony to be captured for the entire world to see and for the abducted children to return home.

Russell hopes that culture makers (Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney) and policy makers (Bill Clinton and Condoleezza Rice) will use their power for good because what they talk about spreads. By the way, Rush Limbaugh made the list of culture makers...mmm...good luck with that one.

The Campaign officially starts April 20, 2012 and the Movie expires December 31, 2012 ten days after the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar.
