Dr. Ewuare X. Osaynde Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Chester Eastside Ministries

Dr. Ewuare Osaynde
Dr. Ewuare Osaynde came to Chester to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on his birthday. It was a small audience but very warm and inviting. Dr. Osaynde spoke so eloquently but yet passionately commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Osaynde is a Professor of African American Studies at Rutgers University. Dr. Osaynde has written several books. His latest book is a collection of poems entitled "Whose America?"

Dr. Osaynde used the words of Dr. King to make sense of our current circumstance. "Where do we go from here," one of Dr. King’s quote from his book in 1967. Dr. King wanted poor people in this nation to know there was a new resurrection of our spirit. Dr. Osaynde spoke about the Wall Street movement, "The Poor People’s Campaign to Occupy Wall Street," He addressed the final years of King’s life and his mission to address poverty and economic inequality. Dr. Osaynde spoke about one more thing that hit home with everyone, the youth. He said there were more African Americans in prison today than there were in slavery. There is a need for quality public education if we want our youth to stay out of prison. Dr. Osaynde basically believes that many of us have become complacent because of our circumstances but we should consider Rosa Parks, John Lewis, and others who have struggled for the movement. Dr. Osaynde concludes, "When we come together as one people, we can change the course of history."
