Chester 2011 State Champs Official Welcome Home Video

Chester Wins 2011 PIAA Boys Class AAAA State Basketball Championship

Terry Berry Chester Alumni, he's at all the games
Chester went against Mt. Lebanon in the toughest win I have seen this basketball season. Chester led 19 to 12 in the first quarter. But Chester watched their points shrink in the second, 34-31, due to bad referee calls. The fans were upset. Chester kept playing through the bad calls as usual because their talent for the game always wins out. In the third quarter, the points tied up 35-35 then Chester pulled ahead 2 points. The score kept going back and forth in this closely played game. The score was tied up 44-44 later in the 3rd then Mt. Lebanon pulled ahead by 1 point 46-45 to end the 3rd. It was not pretty! The game was too intense for me as the scores kept tying up 48-48, 50-50, 55-55 with 1 minute 29 seconds to go, and then 57-57 with 13 seconds to go. The game went into overtime tied up at 57-57. This game was draining. It was like I was playing. I don’t know how many "please God let them win" I said but Chester pulled ahead in overtime to win 72-60.
Chester fan and supporter of the team
Coach Fred Pickett said, “It was a great win.” Congratulations to the Clippers for winning the state championship.

YesGod TV: Chester Goes To The States, Game 4 At Saint Joe's (Chester Vs PW)

Chester vs. Plymouth-Whitemarsh

Penn State Baby!
I got a chance to sit up front for this game. I was almost in the midst of the action. I was sitting with the fans that made it to every game this basketball season. These are the diehard Chester Clippers’ fans. They were revved up for the game. The game was exciting all the way through as Chester took the lead from the first quarter of the game 13-10. Second quarter saw fast action. The Clippers kept the lead but the Colonials kept battling back. At half time, Chester was up 10 points, 30 to Colonial 20. By the end of third quarter, Chester maintained their lead at 42-33. Fourth quarter, Wow! Chester was fired up with shots after shots. The Clippers tore them up. The Colonials were making some desperate shots near the end but they could not catch up or keep up with the Clippers. That 9 points lead in the third quarter got bigger and bigger. Chester ended with a 23 points win, 73-50.

St. Joseph U. Wednesday Night: Final Score
The Clippers had an amazing final quarter. The Clippers are headed to the state for the 16th time. They will play Mount Lebanon which won over Penn Wood in over time, 52-48. The state finals will be at Penn State University’s Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday at 7:00 PM.

Game 3 State Playoffs Chester Vs LaSalle *Yesgod Tv*

Chester-LaSalle: Winning!

The Basketball Team at CHS Before the Game
The Cheerleaders with Coaches Karen Miah and Jennifer Hamm at CHS before the game
Norristown had a full house this afternoon for the Chester LaSalle game. A 1957 Chester High School graduate was at the game to cheer on the Clippers. She said, “They won back then too.” Turns out she was right, Chester beat Reading 52-47 in 1957 in the semi-finals. A couple of fans also remarked, “When you come to these games, you see people you haven’t seen in years.” Glad to see fans come out to cheer Chester on.

First quarter actually started a little slow. The Clippers were behind 7 to 11 to start but picked it up quickly in the middle of the quarter to tie up the game 12-12 at the end. The second quarter the Clippers pulled ahead a little and fought to keep a small lead of 24-21 by half-time. Too close for me but according to the records we are a second half team. While the referees were trying to keep the game close with their calls, Clippers kept the lead at 37-30 to end third quarter. Fourth quarter Chester’s scores kept creeping up more and more. With about 4 minutes left to go, the score was 54-37. People started leaving, “Okay, see you next game.” But LaSalle gained 6 points, 58-43, with little over 2 minutes to go. Clippers dug in, “We’re in baby!” with 1 minute 45 seconds left. Clippers went on to win 68 to 50.

Two more games to go. Clippers go on to the semi-finals to play Plymouth-Whitemarsh on Wednesday.

Widener Partnership Charter School Receives Approval to Expand to Middle School Grades

The Chester Upland School Board on Thursday approved a request by Widener University to expand the Widener Partnership Charter School to include grades six through eight.

The school, which opened in fall 2006, is the first university-based charter school in Pennsylvania. The school currently enrolls about 300 students in grades kindergarten through five.

With the expansion, the school will add 50 students in sixth grade in fall 2011, and the same number of students in seventh and eighth grades in 2012 and 2013 for a total enrollment of 450 students. Students currently enrolled in the school will be given first option to enroll in the elevated grades, and a lottery system will be used if the number of students in any grade falls below 50.

The charter school will accommodate the additional students at its current location at 1450 Edgemont Avenue in Chester and is considering other options, including the U.S. Army’s Recruiting Center at 500 W. 24th Street which will be vacated by the Army in November 2011.

“Parents have been very pleased with the education their children receive at the Widener Partnership Charter School and the results show in their PSSA scores,” said Widener University President James T. Harris III. “The parents clearly wanted their children to continue in the charter school. After pursuing several options and having many conversations with the school district and the parents, we believe the best way forward is by expanding our charter.”

In 2009, the first year students in the charter school were eligible to take the test, 76 percent of third graders scored at proficient or advanced levels in reading, and 70 percent scored at proficient or advanced levels in math. By comparison, the average for third graders in the Chester-Upland School District – where the charter school resides – was 46 percent for reading and 53.6 percent for math.

According to Stephen C. Wilhite, Dean of the Widener School of Human Service Professions and chairperson of the Widener Partnership Charter School Board of Trustees, the school takes a holistic approach to education that emphasizes a low student to teacher ratio, the social and emotional development of each student, a close partnership with parents and caregivers, and the inclusion of music, art, drama, physical and health education and foreign language instruction as integral parts of the curriculum.

“They aren’t just teaching them to be better students, they’re helping them to be better children,” said Patrice Todd, president of the Widener Partnership Charter School Parent and Caregiver Council. “You can see in their grades and even in how they walk down the hallways. It’s great. I love it.”

Because it is affiliated with Widener University, the school receives a variety of supports from the university including education faculty and students who support and enhance the instruction of classroom teachers, graduate students from social work and clinical psychology who provide a range of services to the children and their families, and the use of university facilities such as the Wolfgram Memorial Library, the Science Teaching Center and the Art Gallery.

Widener University is a private, metropolitan university that connects curricula to social issues through civic engagement. Dynamic teaching, active scholarship, personal attention, and experiential learning are key components of the Widener experience. A comprehensive doctorate-granting university, Widener is comprised of eight schools and colleges that offer liberal arts and sciences, professional and pre-professional curricula leading to associate’s, baccalaureate’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The university’s campuses in Chester, Exton, and Harrisburg, Pa., and Wilmington, Del., serve some 6,600 students. Visit the university website, www.widener.edu.
