Alonzo Cavin, Sr.: A Celebration of Life

Dr. Alonzo Cavin had a way of bringing people together. This time people came together to celebrate his life. It was a very pleasant service where one could reminisce about the life and times of a good man. Fr. John Frambes of St. Joseph Catholic Church remarked that Dr. Cavin’s Epitaph could be “He left the world a better place.”

There were reflections of Dr. Cavin. Pete Caputo, Widener University Professor, shared his experiences with the African American Alumni Association which Dr. Cavin started. Professor Caputo said, “He touched lives and gave people lives.” Joy Jones, Executive Director of the American Red Cross (Wallingford Chapter) and Rotary Member read a very beautiful tribute and dedicated a plaque in Dr. Cavin’s honor from the American Red Cross where he served as a board member. Ted O’Tany, Widener University Professor, reflected on his work with Dr. Cavin serving on the advisory board for Project Prepare which began in the sixties when Widener was called PMC. Professor O’Tany said Dr. Cavin should have a “Doctorate in Generosity.”

At the repast, Widener Alumni shared their stories of the past and ideas for the future. Somehow I never joined the Black Student Union or African American Alumni Association which I regret not joining. But I was told that it was not too late to join and was encouraged to do so. The African American Alumni Association is considering changing the name in honor of Dr. Cavin. Also in honor of Dr. Cavin, I will be working on getting a scholarship in his name to be presented by next Class Day. One of the Rotary Students of the Month, Martin Turner, was accepted to Widener on a full scholarship. He was hoping to share the news with Dr. Cavin at the recent graduation from Chester High School. Dr. Cavin has made such a positive impact on the Rotary Students of the Month. They will cherish this year’s experience knowing Dr. Cavin. He was a mentor to all. I am so glad I got the chance to work with him this year.
