Unexpected Pregnancy

This poem is posted for National Poetry Month. The poem is written by student Nasir Young who was featured on this blog in February under the posting “A Poet in Our Midst”. Nasir won the Fall 2010 National Poetry Contest for this poem and was published in Creative Communications Magazine.

Unexpected Pregnancy

You’ve made a mistake that you can’t take back
You can’t tell anyone because they won’t cut any slack
So you keep it a secret letting nobody know.
Your two months pregnant “Hey I might not show”.
Your 15 years old and you have a good heart.
But your baby’s father doesn’t want any parts.
Now you and your baby are in a hospital all alone.
You call your mom on the telephone.
“I had a baby boy and his name is tone”
Your mom is so mad she says “NEVER COME BACK HOME”.
Suddenly all you hear is the dial tone.
You are on the street and don’t know what to do.
Don’t ever think this can’t happen to you.
