Chester Branch NAACP Annual Awards Dinner


Last night, April 15, 2011, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held their annual awards dinner at the Ramada Inn in Essington, PA. It was the 101st anniversary for the banquet. Honorees included adults and youths from the Chester community.

Chester Upland School District was there to acknowledged the youths who were being recognized by the NAACP. These young people are actively involved in school and the community. They have achieved academic honors and demonstrated athletic abilities. Superintendent Joyce Wells was there to congratulate the students on their “prestigious honor.” 

The awards came with varying amounts of scholarship. Here are the youth honorees from Chester High School:
 Nasir Young: The Cora Lee Dixon Youth Award

 Forrest L. Bell: The Gwendolyn J. Foster Youth Award

 Jasmine Barksdale: The Delores R. Shelton Youth Award

Dawn C. Saunders-Lucas, Social Worker: The John Shelton, Sr. Freedom Award
Stacie Hall-Hardy, Principal: The Louis Brown Freedom Award
Stacy Landrum, Fire Fighter: The George T. Raymond Freedom Award
Charlie Warren II, Community Activist: The Cecil W. Bond Freedom Award
Rev Ted and Mrs. Alfreda Reed, Pastor and Community Activist: President’s Award 

Congratulations to all the honorees for their service and commitment in the Chester community.

  2. Our family is so very of our son, nephew and grandson, Nasir Young. We have been so very proud of him for all the acomplishments he has achieved throughout his school years. With this acknowledgement through the NAACP, this honor has put the icing on the cake. With GOD always on his side and the support of his family and friends, we hope this is just the beginning of his journey.
