Sojourner at Chester High School

The recent showing of Sojourner at the Hedgerow Theatre has led to an appearance at Chester High School. Students will get an opportunity to see the one woman play on February 28, 2011 to wrap up Black History Month. The play is being brought to the school through the Social Studies Department. Sojourner is performed by Zuhairah McGill. Students will get a chance to learn more about this historical figure, her life from slavery to the Lincoln White House.

I recently saw the play and I thought the performance was filled with historical facts about Sojourner’s life. But the play was more than just facts. The audience could empathize with the struggles that she encountered throughout her life. When you hear the audience groan, you felt her pain. When you hear the audience laugh, you knew she tried to make the best of the life she had to live. Sojourner was a strong Black woman who lived a tough life. I think students will benefit from learning more about her from the perspective of a performance.
