Bullying Assembly

Recently, Chester High School had assemblies about bullying. Suni Blackwell, a Climate Manager and Anti Bully Control Manager for the district, was the speaker. He opened up with the question; do you consider yourself a bully or the subject of bullying? He cited examples of bullying. One was about the video: Teen Derrion Albert Attacked, Beaten to Death in Melee, a story of a Chicago boy who was an innocent by stander killed by bullies. Now this assembly took place before the latest news report about the student in Upper Darby who was videotaped while being beaten by bullies. I was actually surprised there was an assembly on bullying because I always hoped for this issue to be addressed.

Mr. Blackwell talked about the Student Code of Conduct and reviewed the bullying section with the students to describe bullies and bullying. He reviewed CUSD Bullying Policy on Physical, Verbal, and Non-verbal bullying. Physical bullying is an assault on someone. Verbal bullying is the spreading of rumors and gossip. Non-verbal bullying is cyber-bullying for example online.

What should students do if bullied? Students can report to school administrators and parents/guardian. Bullying can also be reported at the school email: nobullying@chesteruplandsd.org or bullying phone line (610) 447-5888.  With the recent rash of bullying being brought to light and the increase in these incidents, it is good news that the district is focusing on this issue to get a handle on this problem which occurs nationwide.
