Columbus Elementary School: MLK Tribute

"A Day On instead of a Day Off"

Students at Columbus Elementary School will get a chance to hear the “I Have a Dream Speech” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Friday, January 14, 2011 read through the school announcements.

This speech is the prophetic speech that MLK spoke on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. King had given the speech after he helped organize a massive march to Washington, DC, on August 28, 1963. The "I Have a Dream" speech was credited with rallying supporters of desegregation which led to the enactment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Andrea Garrett, Assistant Principal said that students will be taking "a Day On instead of a Day Off” on Monday, January 17, 2011. The older students will volunteer around the city while the younger students will help out at home around the house for their parents and/or relatives. You are never too young to participate in this day of service.
